Paddy crop damage reaches 70–95% in parts of affected areas; 83.5 hectares belonging to 415 farmers impacted
Srinagar, September 25: The Jammu & Kashmir Government will extend financial assistance to all eligible farmers affected by the hailstorm that struck various areas of Srigufwara and Bijbehara during the intervening night of September 18 and 19, 2026, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary informed the Legislative Assembly on Friday.
The Deputy Chief Minister was replying, on behalf of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, to a Calling Attention Motion moved by legislator Dr Bashir Ahmad Shah Veeri during the ongoing Autumn Session.
415 farmers affected across 83.5 hectares
Choudhary said the government had established a mechanism to assess crop damage and provide financial assistance to eligible affected farmers through applicable relief and crop insurance mechanisms.
According to a preliminary assessment, 83.5 hectares of agricultural land belonging to 415 farmers had been affected by the hailstorm.
Paddy crop damage was assessed at between 70 and 95 per cent in several locations, with the highest losses reported in Trai-Sakhras and Hanumanpora, he said.
In the horticulture sector, preliminary damage ranging from 5 to 15 per cent was reported across Hafizabad, Arwani, Rakh Moman, Marhama, T.M. Shah, Semthan, Baliyar, Trail, Hanumanpora, Adlash and Chandpora.
PMFBY and SDRF assistance
The Deputy Chief Minister said farmers enrolled under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) would receive financial settlements directly from designated insurance companies following proper verification.
Farmers who had not registered under PMFBY could be compensated under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), subject to applicable provisions, he added.
Field verification ordered
Choudhary said concerned field agencies had been directed to undertake proper assessment and verification of crop losses to ensure that eligible farmers received relief in accordance with prescribed provisions.
