Beerwah Fruit Association seeks compensation for hailstorm affected farmers, traders

Beerwah, September 12: The Fruit Association Beerwah has expressed concern over extensive damage to standing paddy crops and apple orchards in Wahngam, Rutsun and adjoining areas following a severe hailstorm last night.

The Association said the hailstorm had caused substantial financial losses to farmers, fruit growers and fruit traders who had already purchased produce from growers.

Agriculture and horticulture being major sources of livelihood in the affected areas, the Association said the crop damage could have serious economic consequences for the local community.

The Association acknowledged the visit of Beerwah MLA Dr Shafi Ahmad Wani to the affected areas to assess the difficulties faced by farmers and fruit growers. It also appreciated the visit and assessment efforts of the Chief Horticulture Officer, Budgam.

The Fruit Association Beerwah urged the District Administration Budgam, Department of Horticulture and Department of Agriculture to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the damage and ensure that all affected farmers, fruit growers and fruit traders are covered under applicable relief and compensation schemes.

It also called for expediting the assessment process and providing adequate compensation and relief to help affected stakeholders mitigate their losses.

The Association appreciated the response of the elected representative and departmental officers and expressed hope that necessary relief measures would be implemented at the earliest.
