TAAK calls for responsible, sustainable tourism at 18th AGM

Tourism stakeholders stress better service standards, destination marketing and protection of Kashmir’s fragile environment

SRINAGAR, SEPTEMBER 9: The Travel Agents Association of Kashmir (TAAK) has called for responsible and sustainable tourism practices, improved service standards, stronger destination marketing and greater coordination among tourism stakeholders to ensure the long-term sustainability of Kashmir’s tourism sector.

The call was made at TAAK’s 18th Annual General Meeting (AGM), held at Radisson Collection Hotel & Spa, Riverfront, Srinagar, on September 9.

The AGM reviewed the Association’s activities during 2025–26, including participation in major travel trade fairs, familiarisation (FAM) trips to lesser-explored destinations, member interactions and initiatives undertaken to address issues confronting the tourism sector.

In his welcome address, TAAK President Farooq A. Kuthoo urged the government to expedite marketing campaigns for Kashmir and called for greater coordination and regular dialogue between the government and tourism stakeholders.

Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani stressed the need to improve hospitality and service standards, urging tourism stakeholders to maintain responsible and professional conduct.

He also emphasised the importance of promoting Kashmir tourism at all levels, developing tailor-made tourism experiences and ensuring greater community participation in protecting the region’s environment and tourism assets.

Other speakers highlighted the need for sustainable tourism, preservation of waterbodies and protection of Kashmir’s fragile environment. They called for responsible conduct by all stakeholders to safeguard the region’s tourism resources for the long term.

During the AGM, members shared feedback and suggestions on improving the overall tourism ecosystem and addressing challenges facing the sector.

Manzoor Siddiq Memorial Award presented

The prestigious Manzoor Siddiq Memorial Award was presented to prominent hotelier Mohammad Amin Tramboo in recognition of his contribution to the hospitality and tourism sector.

The AGM was attended by MLA Gulmarg Farooq A. Shah, MLA Zadibal Tanvir Sadiq, SSP Traffic Srinagar Ajaz Ahmad Bhat (IPS), Joint Director Tourism Kashmir Wasim Raja (JKAS), Chairman Hoteliers Club Mushtaq Chaya, social activist Raja Muzaffar, KCCI Secretary General Faiz Bakshi and veteran hotelier GM Dug.

Heads of various travel trade associations and other stakeholders also attended the meeting.

Past Presidents of TAAK Rauf Tramboo, Peerzada Fiayaz and Ashfaq Siddiq were also present.

The AGM concluded with a collective call for responsible tourism, improved service standards, effective destination marketing, stronger stakeholder coordination and sustainable management of Kashmir’s tourism resources.
