DC Budgam reviews parcel train service for apple transportation
Directs Horticulture Department, Railways to ensure smooth, cost-effective movement of fruit to markets
BUDGAM, SEPTEMBER 02: Deputy Commissioner Budgam Athar Aamir Khan on Wednesday chaired a coordination meeting to review the operation of the parcel train service for transporting apples from Budgam Railway Station to markets across the country.
The meeting focused on facilitating and optimizing parcel train services to ensure efficient transportation of locally produced apples during the peak harvest season.
Emphasizing the need for a seamless supply chain mechanism for fruit growers, the Deputy Commissioner said the produce should reach markets across the country swiftly, cost-effectively and with minimal transit damage.
At the outset, Athar Aamir Khan said the parcel train service would provide a major push to the local agricultural and horticultural economy by improving market access for growers.
He directed the Horticulture Department and Railway authorities to work in close coordination to ensure smooth operations at Budgam Railway Station.
The Deputy Commissioner also called for greater awareness among local farmers and traders regarding railway parcel rates and the benefits of transporting fruit by rail.
The meeting discussed measures to address logistical bottlenecks, enhance loading facilities at the railway station and establish cold-chain connectivity to streamline parcel shipments during the peak apple harvesting season.
The coordination meeting was attended by the Chief Area Manager of Railways, Budgam, Chief Horticulture Officer Budgam, all Horticulture Development Officers (HDOs) of the district, Assistant Grading and Marketing Officers of Chadoora and Beerwah, besides other concerned officers.
