New Delhi, July 17: Jammu & Kashmir’s handloom, handicraft and textile sector received international attention at Bharat Tex 2026, with the Union Territory’s pavilion attracting strong buyer interest and a visit from New Zealand’s Minister for Rural Communities and Associate Minister for Agriculture and Regional Development, Mark Patterson.

The Jammu & Kashmir Trade Promotion Organisation (JKTPO), under the Industries and Commerce Department, showcased the region’s textile heritage at the four-day event held from July 14 to 17 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. Around 20 exhibitors from across Jammu & Kashmir participated in the J&K Pavilion, displaying a range of traditional and contemporary products before domestic and international buyers, exporters, designers and sourcing agencies.

Among the products on display were GI-tagged Pashmina shawls, GI-tagged Kani shawls, GI-tagged Kashmiri carpets, handmade Pashmina rugs, wool stoles, scarves, chain-stitch rugs and handcrafted bags. JKTPO said the event provided local artisans, weavers, cooperatives and MSMEs an opportunity to establish business linkages and explore new markets.

A key highlight was the visit of the New Zealand delegation led by Patterson, accompanied by Deputy High Commissioner Mathew Ayers and representatives of the wool and textile industry. The delegation interacted with exhibitors and was briefed on Jammu & Kashmir’s heritage in wool, pashmina, handloom and handicrafts, as well as opportunities for sustainable value chains, technology exchange and trade cooperation.

According to JKTPO, the New Zealand delegation appreciated the craftsmanship and quality of products displayed by artisans from the Union Territory. The visit also underscored the potential for international collaboration in the wool and textile sector.

JKTPO Managing Director said participation in such events reflects the organisation’s commitment to providing global exposure to artisans, weavers and entrepreneurs from Jammu & Kashmir. The official said the strong response to the pavilion highlighted growing appreciation for the Union Territory’s GI-tagged products and traditional crafts.

The J&K showcase was part of Bharat Tex 2026, billed by organisers as the world’s largest integrated textile event. According to official figures, the exhibition brought together 1,647 exhibitors and nearly 95,000 business visitors, including more than 6,000 international buyers from 138 countries. Organisers said over 28,500 business-to-business meetings were held during the event, while business enquiries worth an estimated $2.8 billion were generated.

The event also witnessed textile investment commitments worth around ₹14,300 crore, with more than 30 memorandums of understanding signed by participating states. International delegations from countries including New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Russia, Cambodia and Portugal attended the exhibition alongside representatives from the European Union and several global textile markets.

Officials said the J&K Pavilion witnessed significant footfall throughout the exhibition, generating business enquiries and opening new opportunities for market expansion for participating enterprises.
