Budgam, July 8: Speaker of the Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly Abdul Rahim Rather on Tuesday reviewed the progress of tourism development projects at Yousmarg and adjoining areas, directing departments to expedite works, improve coordination and promote the destination as a year-round tourism hub with a special focus on winter tourism.
Chairing a high-level meeting, the Speaker assessed the implementation of ongoing and proposed projects under the Special Area Sustainable Community-Centred Initiative (SASCI) covering Yousmarg, Haijan, Nilnag, Nagbal and neighbouring areas. The meeting also discussed issues related to forest clearances that have delayed the execution of several development projects.
Chief Executive Officer of the Yousmarg Development Authority (YDA), Riyaz Ahmad, informed the meeting that ₹357 lakh has been sanctioned for 21 ongoing and new works during 2026-27, of which more than ₹85 lakh has already been released. He also presented details of tourism infrastructure, trekking routes, beautification works, parking facilities, adventure tourism activities and plans to promote winter tourism in the area.
Rather stressed the need to develop a network of trekking trails connecting Yousmarg with Drugtolen, Burgah, Nilnag, Haijan, Fresnag and Sang-e-Safaid to enhance eco-tourism and provide visitors with improved recreational opportunities.
Calling for better interdepartmental coordination, he directed the concerned departments to resolve bottlenecks, particularly those relating to forest clearances and procedural approvals, to ensure that development works are completed on schedule.
The Speaker also instructed executing agencies to adhere to timelines while maintaining quality standards, saying that durable infrastructure should remain the priority.
Highlighting Yousmarg’s potential as an all-season destination, Rather emphasised the need to develop winter tourism and adventure sports, saying these initiatives could attract more visitors and generate livelihood opportunities for local youth.
He also directed the concerned departments to complete the Haijan–Yousmarg bridge during the current financial year, describing the project as important for improving connectivity for both tourists and local residents.
Earlier, the Speaker visited Darewan Basti, where residents sought the development of the traditional settlement as a heritage tourism destination to showcase its culture, architecture and way of life.
Responding to the demand, Rather said the village would be developed in a planned manner as a heritage tourism destination. He said more than ₹412 lakh has been sanctioned under SASCI for the development and beautification of Darewan Basti, including the upgradation of traditional Kothas, road connectivity improvements, installation of solar lights and construction of pathways.
The Speaker also met public delegations who raised issues related to road connectivity, mobile network coverage, ATM facilities and other essential public amenities. He assured them that their genuine demands would be taken up with the concerned departments for early redressal.
Among those present at the meeting were Chief Conservator of Forests, Kashmir, Irfan Rasool Wani; Chief Executive Officer, Yousmarg Development Authority, Riyaz Ahmad; Executive Engineers of Chadoora and Charar-e-Sharief divisions, besides senior officers of the Yousmarg Development Authority, Forest Department, Tourism Department, Public Works (R&B) Department and BSNL.
