A Board for Kashmiri Pandit return, reconciliation and revival

The story of Kashmir cannot be told fully without acknowledging the profound contribution of Kashmiri Pandits to its civilizational, cultural and intellectual heritage. For centuries, Kashmir’s identity was shaped by the coexistence of diverse communities that together nurtured traditions of scholarship, spirituality, literature, governance and social harmony. The displacement of Kashmiri Pandits in the 1990s was therefore not merely the tragedy of one community; it was a loss for the entire society.

Today, as Jammu & Kashmir seeks to build a future founded on peace, prosperity and reconciliation, there is a compelling case for establishing a dedicated Kashmiri Pandit Return and Rehabilitation Board. Such an institution could provide a comprehensive and long-term framework for facilitating the dignified return of those who wish to reconnect with their ancestral homeland.

The objective must go beyond housing or financial assistance. A dedicated board should focus on rebuilding confidence, preserving cultural heritage, restoring community linkages and creating opportunities for social and economic participation. It could coordinate efforts related to rehabilitation, livelihood generation, heritage conservation, educational initiatives and investment promotion, while ensuring that returning families are able to reintegrate with dignity and security.

The return of Kashmiri Pandits should not be viewed as a matter of statistics or political symbolism. It is fundamentally about restoring a shared social fabric that once made Kashmir a model of pluralism and cultural synthesis. The Valley’s rich traditions of learning, intellectual inquiry and interfaith coexistence were strengthened by the contributions of all communities, including Kashmiri Pandits, whose influence continues to be visible across academia, administration, arts, sciences and public life.

Encouraging the community’s return and participation in the region’s development would help revive these traditions while creating new opportunities for future generations. It would also send a powerful message that reconciliation and coexistence remain possible even after decades of pain and separation.

It is therefore encouraging that the idea of reconnecting the Kashmiri Pandit community with its roots received support during the Global Kashmiri Pandit Conclave in Srinagar. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha called upon members of the global Kashmiri Pandit diaspora to contribute to Jammu & Kashmir’s development through industries, educational institutions and cultural centres. Significantly, Advisor to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Nasir Aslam Wani, also supported the broader vision of strengthening the community’s relationship with its homeland.

A dedicated board can transform such aspirations into an institutional mission—one aimed not only at facilitating return, but at restoring the centuries-old ethos of brotherhood, diversity, intellectual excellence and shared belonging that has long defined Kashmir’s finest traditions.
