Srinagar, June 12: Renowned Kashmiri folk and light music singer Shazia Hamid has been selected for the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar, one of the country’s highest recognitions for young performing artists.
Popularly known among music lovers as the “Raj Begum of modern times,” Shazia Hamid has earned acclaim for her distinctive singing style, powerful voice and rendition of high-pitched Kashmiri folk and light music compositions. Over the years, she has carved out a unique place for herself in the cultural landscape of Jammu and Kashmir through her contributions to the preservation and promotion of Kashmiri music.
Reacting to the announcement, former Secretary of the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages and Patron of Adbi Markaz Kamraz, Rafeeq Masoodi, congratulated the singer on the achievement.
Masoodi described the award as a recognition of Shazia Hamid’s talent, dedication and contribution to Kashmiri music. He expressed hope that the honour would pave the way for greater national and international recognition of her artistic work in the years ahead.
The Sangeet Natak Akademi’s Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar is awarded annually to outstanding young practitioners in the fields of music, dance and theatre for their contribution to India’s performing arts traditions.
