Ziraat Times Team Report
SRINAGAR: Jammu & Kashmir has reported a significant 0.78 lakh hectares of cropped area affected by floods and hydro-meteorological disasters during the 2025 monsoon season.
This data, provided by the concerned ministry in the Parliament on Tuesday, highlights the impact of weather-related events on the region’s agriculture, even as the Union Territory shows efforts in adopting the national crop insurance scheme.
Crop damage footprint
The 0.78 lakh hectares of affected cropped area places J&K among the states/UTs that have reported land damage due to natural calamities this year. Nationally, the total cropped area affected across all reporting states/UTs reached 116.60 lakh hectares.
The primary responsibility for on-ground relief and disbursal of assistance rests with the State Governments/UT Administrations, drawing funds from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).
The Central Government supplements these efforts, providing additional financial support from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) in cases of ‘severe nature’ disasters.
Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) adoption
Despite the damage, farmers in J&K showed participation in the national crop insurance program during the Kharif 2025 season.
As on October 31, 2025, the following figures were reported for the Union Territory under the PMFBY and RWBCIS (Restructured Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme):
-
Farmers Applications Insured: 1.9 lakh
-
Approved Claims (₹ Crore): 0.0
-
Paid Claims (₹ Crore): 0.0
