SRINAGAR: Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo on Thursday chaired a high-level meeting of senior officials to review the implementation of recent Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms in Jammu and Kashmir and stressed that the benefits of reduced tax rates must directly reach consumers.
The meeting was attended by Principal Secretary, Finance; Commissioner Secretary, Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs (FCS&CA); Directors of FCS&CA Kashmir and Jammu; Controller, Legal Metrology, besides other officers.
Dulloo underlined the need for strict enforcement to prevent unjustified pricing and directed the Legal Metrology Department (LMD) to constitute special market-checking teams. These teams will monitor retail and wholesale markets to ensure commodity prices are reduced in line with the GST rate cuts announced by the Central Government.
Commissioner Secretary FCS&CA, Saurabh Bhagat, informed the meeting that several companies have already revised their product pricing under the new tax regime. As many as 169 companies have submitted revised rates to the Legal Metrology Department.
The Chief Secretary emphasized that the reforms, effective from September 22, 2025, must translate into visible relief for ordinary consumers in the coming days. He said the Legal Metrology Department would intensify inspections and take strict action against violators.
“The objective of these reforms is consumer welfare. It is imperative that the reduction in GST rates results in lower market prices so that people feel the real benefit,” Dulloo said.
The meeting reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding consumer interests and ensuring transparency in the market system.
