Srinagar: In a worrying development, the River Jhelum has breached its bund at Shalina on the Srinagar outskirts near Pampore, sending flood waters rushing towards Nowgam and adjoining low-lying areas.
According to initial reports, the bund breach occurred in the Zinpora area of Pampore in the early hours of Thursday, raising alarm in nearby habitations. The gushing waters are now moving rapidly, threatening areas including Lasjan, Nowgam, Shalina, Tengan, and adjoining localities.
Authorities have advised residents in the vulnerable zones to remain alert and prepare for possible evacuation as a precautionary measure.
Local sources said that even as water levels in the Jhelum had been stabilising during the night after rising over the past 24 hours following continuous rains, despite reinforcement efforts, the weakened bund gave during the night time.
Disaster management teams and district officials are closely monitoring the situation, while rescue and relief teams are reportedly on standby.
This comes at a time when several districts across Jammu & Kashmir are already grappling with flood-like conditions, cloudbursts, and landslides, compounding the crisis for local people.
