Srinagar: The Anti-Corruption Court Srinagar on Wednesday convicted retired IAS officer Habibul Hassan Beigh, former member of the Special Tribunal, J&K Government, in a long-pending corruption case and sentenced him to one year’s imprisonment along with a fine of ₹15 lakh.
The judgment was announced by Additional Special Judge Anti-Corruption, Srinagar, Faizan-ul-Haq Iqbal, in connection with FIR No. 22/1997 registered by the Vigilance Organization Kashmir (now Anti-Corruption Bureau).
The case, filed in 1997 under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act and the J&K Public Men & Public Servants Declaration of Assets Act, accused Beigh of amassing huge movable and immovable assets disproportionate to his known sources of income during his service.
After a detailed investigation, the Vigilance Organization had filed a charge sheet in November 2000. The prosecution presented oral and documentary evidence establishing the allegations beyond doubt.
The court, after hearing the arguments led by Senior Prosecuting Officer Wajahat Jameel on behalf of ACB, found the accused guilty under Sections 5(1)(e) and 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Beigh, son of late Ghulam Hassan Beigh of Chinar Colony, Barzulla Srinagar, was sentenced to one year’s imprisonment and a fine of ₹15 lakh.
The conviction comes nearly three decades after the registration of the case and marks a significant outcome in the state’s anti-corruption drive.
