J&K Handicraft Employees Association calls for urgent policy review to protect employee financial security

Srinagar: The Jammu & Kashmir Handicraft Employees Association has raised strong concerns over J&K Bank’s recent move to deduct advance EMIs from the accounts of salaried employees—without prior notice—causing confusion and financial stress among government workers.

Suhaib Munshi, President of the Handicraft Employees Association and Provincial President (Kashmir) of the National Movement for Old Pension Scheme (NMOPS), called the bank’s action “distressing” and “unilateral,” noting that several employees discovered overdrafts in their accounts with no prior, clear communication.

“This has caused distress among many government employees who rely on timely and full disbursement of their salaries to manage household expenses,” Munshi said.

While acknowledging the bank’s intention to protect customers’ CIBIL credit scores, Munshi emphasized that any such financial measure should be implemented only after informed consent and proper consultation with account holders.

“We believe a more flexible and transparent approach could help achieve the same goals without disrupting families’ monthly budgets,” he added.

The Association urged J&K Bank to immediately review its policy and explore alternatives such as EMI cycle adjustments or structured repayment plans that uphold both financial stability and the dignity of salaried customers.

The statement concluded with an appeal to the bank and relevant authorities to prioritize employee welfare in all decisions affecting their financial lives.
