KCCI expresses concern over climate change impact on Kashmir economy

Srinagar: The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) expresses deep concern over the severe impacts of climate change and irregular weather patterns on Kashmir’s economy. The Chamber emphasises that immediate action is required to protect both the environment and economic interests of the region.

Recent climate-related developments have significantly affected multiple sectors of Kashmir’s economy.

As we approach the summer months, the alarming trend of drying springs and diminishing water bodies raises serious concerns for water availability. These changes are exacerbated by factors such as climate change, neglect of natural resources, mismanagement of wetlands, deforestation, pollution, and unsustainable water management practices. The consequences of negligible rain and snowfall, water scarcity, springs drying, and fast melting of glaciers can significantly impact people’s lives, agriculture, horticulture and other economic activities.

The region has witnessed an unprecedented 80% reduction in hydroelectric power generation, severely impacting industrial and residential power supply. The tourism sector, a crucial economic driver, has experienced a marked decline due to minimal snowfall in popular winter destinations. The prestigious Khelo India Winter Games in Gulmarg had to be postponed due to insufficient snow coverage, affecting both adventure tourism and regional reputation.

International tourism, particularly in the adventure and recreational segments, has sadly experienced a substantial downturn. This decline directly impacts foreign exchange earnings and employment in the tourism sector.

Hon’ble Chief Minister Mr Omar Abdullah has acknowledged these challenges, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive climate action.

The Chief Minister has warned that J&K is facing a significant water crisis this year, a situation that has not emerged overnight but has been developing over several years. This alarming reality prompts critical questions about the accountability of senior officers who have held positions of responsibility during this period.

KCCI will conduct extensive programmes/Seminars with key stakeholders to develop and implement climate change mitigation strategies. These sessions will focus on practical solutions.

KCCI advocates for enhanced protection of Kashmir’s water bodies, rivers, wetlands and lakes. The chamber emphasises the critical need for immediate conservation efforts to preserve these natural resources.

KCCI is committed to promoting a balanced approach between economic development and environmental preservation, ensuring long-term sustainability for the region.

KCCI has called on the government to urgently develop a contingency plan and high-powered committee under the leadership of Chief Minister Mr Omar Abdullah. It has also requested that sufficient funds be allocated in the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir Budget to address the immediate challenges facing the region.

The KCCI calls upon governmental bodies to prioritise environmental protection through policy implementation and strict regulatory measures. The Chamber emphasises that Kashmir’s economic future depends on immediate and decisive action to address these environmental challenges.
