Will defeat the purpose: Omar Abdullah clarifies stance on Srinagar-Katra train change proposal

Srinagar: In a recent social media post, former Jammu &  Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah clarified his position regarding the proposed train change for passengers traveling on the Srinagar-Katra rail line. His latest statement comes amid public concern over security protocols that may require passengers to switch trains mid-journey.

Omar Abdullah, while speaking to media persons at Gulmarg on Sunday, had said that people should not resent the train change at Katra, as it was a ‘safety requirement.’

“Just to remove any chance of misunderstanding, while we understand the need to secure the train and passengers who will travel using it, making passengers change trains will defeat the very purpose of the line and render the thousands of crores of investment pointless,” Omar Abdullah stated Sunday evening. He emphasized that while security checks at Katra or Jammu are understandable, forcing passengers to switch trains would undermine the efficiency and utility of the line.

This clarification marks a shift from his earlier remarks, where he seemed more supportive of the measure, stating it was necessary for passenger safety and urging people not to oppose it. The apparent volte-face reflects his evolving stance as public discourse on the issue intensifies.

The suggestion of a train change sparked concerns among travelers and local stakeholders who view the direct connectivity between Srinagar and Delhi as a significant step toward enhancing tourism, trade, and ease of travel in the region. Many fear that introducing logistical hurdles would dilute the benefits of the rail project, which has involved substantial investment and long-term planning.
