Finally, Sadhna Tunnel between Kashmir valley and Karnah to become a reality

Srinagar: In a major step towards addressing decades-old demands of the people of Karnah valley in north Kashmir, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and the Border Roads Organization (BRO) have initiated work on the much-anticipated Sadhna Pass Tunnel in Kupwara diateict. This project aims to provide all-weather connectivity to the remote regions of Tangdhar and Karnah in the border district of Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir.

The Sadhna Pass, located at an altitude of approximately 10,000 feet, serves as the only road link  for the residents of Tangdhar and Karnah with the Kashmir Valley and outside world. During the harsh winter months, heavy snowfall and frost make the pass treacherous and often result in complete closure, cutting off these areas from the rest of the valley.

The lack of connectivity has also been posing severe challenges, especially in securing life-saving healthcare. Emergency medical evacuations are often delayed or rendered impossible, putting lives at risk. The region has remained isolated since the division of Kashmir and the establishment of the Line of Control (LoC).

Officials told Ziraat Times that as per the feasibility assessment, the proposed tunnel under the Sadhna Pass will span 6.2 kilometers. A 1.0-kilometer approach road will lead to the western portal from the Karnah side.

The project implementation will involve RITES-Bernard (JV) in collaboration with SECL.

For the residents of Karnah, the tunnel could mean year-round connectivity, enhancing trade and tourism, boosting the local economy.

Improved connectivity will also bring the region closer to the rest of the valley, residents believe.

For decades, the people of Karnah have been advocating for this tunnel, highlighting its critical importance for survival and development.
