Pertinently, environmental advocacy group, Environmental Policy Group (EPG) has been highlighting these issues lately and had called for action to protect rivers and streams from such loss.
Nine individuals involved in the illegal extraction and transportation of minerals were also taken into custody. The arrests were made following coordinated efforts by police teams from the police stations of Magam, Beerwah, and Khansahib. Six First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed against the accused in connection with these violations. The Budgam Police has collaborated with the Geology and Mining Department to ensure strict enforcement of anti-mining regulations. As part of the drive, fines amounting to lakhs of rupees have been imposed on the violators. This proactive approach is intended to deter repeat offenders and send a strong message to those engaging in illegal mining activities, officials said.
