Kashmir wetlands concerns: CM Omar writes to EPG; promises ‘appropriate action’

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, has assured action on issues concerning wetland degradation in Kashmir following a representation from the Environmental Policy Group (EPG).

In response to a letter sent by EPG Convenor Faiz Ahmad Bakshi, dated November 8, 2024, the Chief Minister confirmed that the matter has been referred to the Minister for Forest, Ecology, and Environment for examination and appropriate action.

EPG has raised alarm over the continued degradation of wetlands in Kashmir, highlighting their ecological and socio-economic importance. The group noted that wetlands such as Hokersar, Haigam, Wular, and Dal face severe threats due to unchecked encroachments, pollution, and inadequate conservation measures. These wetlands, vital for flood control, groundwater recharge, and biodiversity conservation, are shrinking at an alarming rate, leading to significant ecological imbalances.

The group also flagged violations of wetland management rules and the absence of stringent monitoring mechanisms. According to EPG, unregulated urban expansion and rampant solid waste disposal have exacerbated the wetlands’ plight, calling for immediate intervention to reverse the damage.
