Health Insurance for Senior Citizens: Ziraat Times summarises latest NHA note

Srinagar, Sept 23: National Health Authority (NHA) of the Government of India has issued a memo detailing the features of the approval of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) scheme including all senior citizens aged 70 and above, regardless of their socioeconomic status.

According to the memo, a copy of which has been received by Ziraat Times, key features of the Extended Healthcare Scheme are as below:

Eligibility Expansion: Previously, AB PM-JAY was limited to lower-income families. Now, any senior citizen over the age of 70 can access the scheme based solely on age, confirmed via Aadhaar records.

Health Coverage: Beneficiaries can avail a shared annual coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per family, which can be topped up by another ₹5 lakh specifically allocated for the treatment of senior members.

Integration with Other Schemes: Seniors currently enrolled in other state or central health schemes have the option to either continue with their existing plan or switch to AB PM-JAY to avoid duplication of benefits.

Continuous Enrollment: The process of registration is ongoing throughout the year, making it easier for eligible seniors to join the program at any time.

Implementation and Support:

The scheme’s implementation requires active involvement from state and union territory governments to register all eligible seniors. Extensive awareness campaigns are planned to inform the public about these new benefits. Moreover, the government has emphasized the need for robust community outreach programs and the support of various stakeholders including hospitals and healthcare providers to ensure the scheme’s successful rollout, the memo notes.

Request for Active Participation:

The National Health Authority has called for the active participation of all related parties to ensure the smooth implementation and success of this expanded coverage, indicating a collaborative approach to public health management.
