Joint Traders Association calls for stakeholder consultation on “Close Day” directive

Srinagar, 4 Sept: The Joint Traders Association (JTA), an amalgam of 12 central markets in Srinagar, acknowledges the recent directive issued by the Labour Commissioner of Jammu and Kashmir, mandating the observance of a weekly “Close Day” under Section 13 of the Jammu and Kashmir Shops & Establishment Act, 1966. The JTA supports the intent behind this directive, which is aimed at ensuring workers’ welfare and adherence to statutory requirements. However, Farhan Kitab, Chairman of the JTA and head of the Regal Chowk Traders Association, emphasized the need for stakeholder consultation in the implementation process. “While we are not against the directive, it is crucial that the traders, who are directly impacted by this policy, are taken on board. By involving us in the decision-making process, a specific day of the week could be selected that best accommodates both the business community and the general public,” Kitab stated. The JTA believes that a collaborative approach would lead to a more effective and seamless implementation of the “Close Day” policy, minimizing any potential disruption to businesses and ensuring that the needs of all stakeholders are adequately addressed. The Joint Traders Association remains committed to working with the authorities to ensure the welfare of workers while also safeguarding the interests of the business community.
