66% of J&K residents say expenses ‘difficult to manage’, 38% report income down – Latest survey finds

Srinagar, Aug 23: A staggering 66% of J&K residents have said that it is ‘difficult for them to manage their expenses’, while 38% report that their income is down since last year.

These findings are part of the “Mood of the Nation” survey conducted by the India Today Group in August 2024.

Ziraat Times here produces the key findings of the survey:

Income Down, Expenditure Up (38%):

A significant 38% of respondents reported a decline in income coupled with rising expenses. Analysts believe that this combination is particularly alarming, as it may suggest that many individuals and households are under substantial financial stress in J&K today.

Expenses Difficult to Manage (67%):

A staggering 67% of respondents stated that their current expenses are harder to manage compared to the previous year. This majority highlights the severe financial pressure that rising costs, inflation, and possibly stagnant incomes are placing on households across the region.

The survey also identified the top concerns among Jammu & Kashmir residents:

Unemployment (47%):
Nearly half of the respondents (47%) have identified unemployment as the most critical issue, highlighting the general concern in J&K today with job scarcity, especially among educated youth.

Rising Prices (17%):
Inflation, or rising prices, was cited by 17% of respondents as a major concern. While analysts feel that this may not be the true representation of the actual number of people feeling the pinch, they believe that this still underlines the economic strain on households as they grapple with increasing costs of living.

Income Same, Expenditure Up (30%):

Another 30% of respondents indicated that while their income remained unchanged, their expenses increased. Only 13% of respondents experienced simultaneous increases in income and expenditure. This group, though smaller, shows that some individuals have seen financial improvements but are also spending more, possibly on better living standards or due to higher costs. A mere 1% of the population reported no change in either income or expenditure.

Expenses Up But Manageable (20%):
20% of the population finds their increased expenses manageable, suggesting they have the financial resilience to cope with rising costs.

Expenses Gone Down (5%):
Only 5% have seen a decrease in their expenses, which may be attributed to careful budgeting or beneficial economic changes.

Development As the Most Important Issue (11%):
Only 11% viewed development as the most important issue, indicating that while development efforts are recognized, they are overshadowed by more immediate economic hardships like unemployment and inflation.
