J&K Finance Dept exempts elderly and ailing pensioners from physical verification

Srinagar, August 14: In a significant move aimed at easing the burden on elderly and ailing pensioners, the Government of Jammu & Kashmir’s Finance Department has issued a circular exempting certain categories of pensioners from the mandatory physical verification process for the year 2023-24. The decision comes as part of an ongoing exercise to verify the records of approximately 2.3 lakh pensioners and family pensioners in the Union Territory.

According to the circular dated August 14, 2024, a copy of which has been made available to Ziraat Times, the Finance Department has already completed the verification of around 1 lakh pensioners, accounting for approximately 42% of the total number. In an effort to further facilitate this process, pensioners aged 80 years and above, as well as those suffering from serious illnesses or other valid reasons, are now specifically exempted from visiting the treasury in person.

The circular says  that the following categories of pensioners are not required to appear in person for verification:

1. Pensioners/family pensioners aged 80 years or above.
2. Pensioners/family pensioners suffering from any serious illness.
3. Pensioners/family pensioners with any other valid reasons.

To accommodate these pensioners, the Treasury officers have been instructed to contact them using the contact details already available in the Treasury records and coordinate for a home visit. Furthermore, pensioners who face difficulties in appearing in person due to illness or other valid reasons are advised to contact the concerned Treasury Officer for assistance.

This measure is expected to alleviate the difficulties faced by a significant number of pensioners who may otherwise struggle with the physical demands of the verification process.

The Finance Department has urged the public to disseminate this information widely to ensure that all eligible pensioners are informed of their exemptions.
