I experienced Kashmir’s cultural affinity and love at Yusmarg

It has been more than a week since I attended the theatre conference at Yousmarg organised by our own Feroz Cultural Forum but I have been unable to sit down and put in words my thoughts that keep knocking at my skull bones to find expression. A tight schedule at work kept me occupied as I kept reading reviews by eminent people and reactions of equally respectable people.

I am a doctor and decently qualified at that. I think I can handle public appearances thanks to dad being in public life for as long as I can remember but that I felt inadequate at that event would be a gross understatement. The event started with a young artist reciting the Quran and a naat in such a beautiful voice that I could barely hold back my tears. Then the guest of honour was announced, Shaad Ramzan Sahab who I knew as my Facebook friend till then but the reverence dad showed him made me realise he must be best at what he does and it took me just one line of his speech to realise what a great scholar I was sharing the stage with. For the first time sitting on a stage I had such goosebumps as I kept listening to philosophy hidden in poetry and literature. Before Shaad Sb spoke other literary figures present there notably Mohd Amin Bhat Sb., Shafi Shakir Sb., Majeed Majazi Sb all spoke with such eloquence that I was spellbound. As the program was on a known figure entered and it took me a minute to realise I was seeing an artist of the highest calibre Bashir Dada Sb in front of my eyes. Dada Sb’s speech was the bold truth spoken without hesitation and without even a slight effort to please anyone. I witnessed the art of speaking your heart out literally. And each speech kept reminding me how utterly underrated this section of intellectuals is in our society. And what great injustice we, as a society, are doing to this highly respectable class of people.

Not to forget a young speaker Gulzar Nazki whose conduct of the ceremony was full of stage confidence and meaningful poetry, Manzoor Dar whose comic appearance in a small skit presented there was highly entertaining, Ghulam Nabi Yattoo Sb who spoke with the eloquence unique to him, Shahid Shabir whose organisational skills could make the event possible and all the other members of Feroz Cultural Forum who are young to the world of theatre but will, I am sure, go a long way in the field.

GAASH was mentioned with so much love and blessings by many speakers and was even honoured with an award of appreciation. I remain grateful for the love so many people showered on team Gaash and I reiterate my assertion that I am doing no one a favour by being there at GAASH for my people. It is soul food for me to be there and receive so many blessings and so much love from people across the board irrespective of their social or political affiliation. I shall remember this love and respect till I live and try to reciprocate it in whatever little way I can.

Thank you Feroz Cultural Forum for this wonderful opportunity to meet and interact with such intellectuals and for the realization that I need to work on myself a lot to understand life like these beautiful people do.
