Srinagar Ring Road: As construction begins, Wathora farmers allege damage to crops

Budgam March 1: A group of farmers in central Kashmir’s Wathora Chadoora  area have called upon that the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), NKC Pvt Ltd and District Administration Budgam to show compassion towards the uprooting of fruit trees and standing mustard crop which they say have been damaged during the ongoing construction work of the Ring Road. The group of farmers said that even the crops and the fruit trees of those farmers have been damaged who have not received any compensation for the land utilized for the road so far.

In a statement the farmers said that hundreds of apple and plum trees have been uprooted during the last two days and more than 100 kanals of land with mustard crop has been damaged.

“Some farmers have taken part of the compensation for land but many have not. How can JCBs damage our mustard crop when I and my extended family have not received even a penny? The awards have not been prepared in time, they have lapsed long back. We need justice, “ said Gulzar Ahmad Akhoon, a local resident.

The apple farmers allege that the government has paid them compensation as per 1996 rates when the wholesale rate of apples and plum was mere Rs 16 per kg in market.

NHAI or Budgam Administration could not be immediately reached for their comments on the matter.
