J&K’s unemployment 9%, Delhi’s 9.4% in March: CMIE

Srinagar: Unemployment in Jammu & Kashmir was estimated to be at 9% during the month of March, while Delhi’s unemployment rate was estimated to be comparatively more – at 9.4%.

This data was released on Thursday by the Centre for Monitoring of Indian Economy (CMIE), which undertakes unemployment surveys of states and union territories on a monthly basis.

Experts in J&K have often expressed their skepticism about the accuracy of this data and the methodology adopted in estimating J&K’s unemployment rate. Experts’ contention is that J&K’s current unemployment rate is much higher than reported in CMIE data. Similarly, there is skepticism about J&K and Delhi being almost in the same league in the latest report.

India’s overall unemployment was estimated to be 6.6% in March 2021.

The highest unemployment rate estimated in the country in March was in Haryana, which was reported to be 28.1%, followed by Goa where the unemployment was estimated to be 22.1%.

Interestingly, unemployment rate in Uttar Pradesh – India’s most populous state – was estimated to be only 4.1%

The country’s lowest unemployment rate was reported in Assam at 1.1%, followed by Karnataka which is 1.2%.
