Jammu, Nov 15: The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has launched a large-scale initiative to revive and restore traditional water bodies across the city amid growing concerns over the disappearance of ponds, wells and natural water sources due to rapid urbanisation and rising aridity.
As part of the campaign, a historic pond in Ward No. 75, Durgochak area of Sangrampur, is set to undergo complete conservation and restoration. The foundation stone for the project was laid on Friday by MLA Surendra Kumar in the presence of Municipal Commissioner Dr. Devansh Yadav.
The revitalisation project, estimated at ₹23.36 lakh, includes desilting and cleaning of the pond, installation of guardrails, development of a walkway, ornamental plantation and creation of green banks. The move aims to restore ecological balance while turning the site into an attractive and clean recreational space for residents.
MLA Surendra Kumar urged the public to actively participate in protecting natural water sources. He appealed to the community to keep their surroundings clean, refrain from throwing waste into water bodies and take collective responsibility for conserving traditional ponds and wells.
In addition to the pond restoration, 300 streetlights were handed over for installation in the ward to improve public lighting and safety. Municipal Commissioner Dr. Yadav said JMC is working diligently to upgrade civic facilities across Jammu, adding that the citywide streetlight installation programme is progressing rapidly to enhance the overall urban environment.
Senior officials, including Joint Commissioner (W) Firdous Ahmad Qazi, Executive Engineer (Electrical) Simarpal Singh, and Executive Engineer Division III Akhil Dutt, were present at the event.
The JMC said the initiative marks a renewed push towards environmental conservation and sustainable urban development in Jammu.
