New Delhi: In a major step towards boosting India’s industrial competitiveness, NITI Aayog’s Frontier Tech Hub on Tuesday unveiled a strategic roadmap titled “Reimagining Manufacturing: India’s Roadmap to Global Leadership in Advanced Manufacturing.” The initiative aims to position India among the world’s top three hubs for advanced manufacturing by 2035, with manufacturing contributing over 25% to the national GDP and generating more than 100 million jobs.
The roadmap was unveiled in Pune in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, NITI Aayog CEO B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, State Minister Madhuri Misal, CII Director General Chandrajit Banerjee, and other dignitaries from government and industry.
Focus on Frontier Technologies
The document lays out a sector-specific plan to harness Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Robotics, Digital Twins, and Advanced Materials to transform 13 priority manufacturing sectors. It envisions a decade-long, coordinated effort to strengthen R&D ecosystems, industrial infrastructure, and workforce capabilities, ensuring large-scale adoption of these technologies.
The roadmap also warns that India could miss a “historic window of opportunity” if it fails to adopt frontier technologies, potentially losing US$ 270 billion by 2035 and US$ 1 trillion by 2047 in additional manufacturing GDP.
Leaders Emphasize Urgency and Vision
Speaking at the launch, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said Maharashtra would take the lead in aligning with the National Mission on Manufacturing.
“If India has to achieve exponential growth, it cannot come from business-as-usual. Frontier technology is the marriage of science and technology that drives automation, efficiency, and global competitiveness,” he said, adding that Maharashtra aims to become a global hub for advanced manufacturing.
NITI Aayog CEO B.V.R. Subrahmanyam highlighted that the roadmap provides a “decisive, time-bound course” to make India an advanced manufacturing powerhouse by 2035.
“Incremental change will not suffice. Integrating frontier technologies will build precision, resilience, and sustainability into our manufacturing DNA,” he said.
Debjani Ghosh, Distinguished Fellow at NITI Aayog, underlined the urgency of modernizing the sector.
“The window to act is narrow. By embedding technology into our industrial ecosystem, we can generate millions of high-quality jobs and make our factories symbols of innovation and national strength,” she said.
Collaborative Effort
Developed jointly by NITI Aayog’s Frontier Tech Hub, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), and Deloitte, with guidance from an expert council of industry leaders, the roadmap represents a collective push toward technology-driven industrial transformation.
Government officials, industry members, and ecosystem partners participated in the launch event, reflecting a shared resolve to advance India’s global leadership in manufacturing and contribute to the vision of Viksit Bharat @ 2047.
