SRINAGAR: The 60 Million Litres Daily (MLD) Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) at Noorbagh, Srinagar, is set to be commissioned on October 31, marking a major boost to the city’s urban sanitation network. The project, which will benefit around 15,000 households, forms a key component of the Comprehensive Sewerage Scheme for Greater Srinagar.
Divisional Commissioner (Div Com) Kashmir, Anshul Garg, conducted an on-site inspection of the facility on Wednesday to review its operational readiness. The plant, initiated under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM), was executed by the Urban Environmental Engineering Department (UEED) under the supervision of the Housing and Urban Development Department. Originally estimated at ₹143 crore, the project cost was later revised to ₹157 crore.
Speaking during the visit, Garg emphasized the importance of the project in enhancing urban sanitation infrastructure and improving environmental and public health standards in Srinagar. He noted that a trial run of the plant has already begun after the NBCC and UEED accelerated efforts to complete the long-pending work.
Acknowledging the city’s population growth since the project’s inception, Garg announced that the administration has begun planning a second phase of the project—a 70 MLD facility—to meet increasing demand in line with the city’s expansion.
The Div Com also directed the Superintending Engineer, UEED, to initiate steps for securing a dedicated power supply line to ensure uninterrupted functioning of the plant. He further instructed officials to finalize the Detailed Project Report (DPR) within a week for utility shifting, tertiary treatment, automated quality monitoring, and other infrastructure upgrades for submission to the Administrative Department.
During his interaction with local residents, Garg heard their concerns about sewerage and stormwater issues and assured that these would be addressed promptly.
Responding to media queries about the power supply situation in the Valley, Garg said that ensuring reliable electricity remains a top administrative priority. He added that regular reviews are being held at both the Union Territory and Divisional levels to monitor power supply. “Pruning of trees, maintenance works, and augmentation of transformer buffer stock are underway to ensure preparedness for winter. The power scenario this year is expected to be better than previous years,” he said.
Garg was accompanied by the Commissioner, Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), Additional Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, and senior officers from the Revenue Department and UEED during the inspection.
