Ziraat Times News Desk

SRINAGAR: Eminent surgeon and former Principal of Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar, Dr. Syed Ashiq Hussain Naqshbandi, passed away early this morning, plunging Kashmir’s medical fraternity and society at large into mourning. He was laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard at Naqshband Sahab (RA) Khanqah, Khwaja Bazar, Srinagar after Namaz-e-Janaza at 11 a.m.

Dr. Naqshbandi was regarded as one of the pioneers of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery in Kashmir. He left a profound mark not only in the field of surgery and medical education but also through his role in establishing the Cancer Society of Kashmir, which has provided relief to thousands of patients over the years. Colleagues and friends remembered him as a disciplined, honest, and compassionate doctor who lived a simple but graceful life.

Prominent voices across professions paid rich tributes to the departed soul.

Famous broadcaster Hussain Zaffar described his passing as a national loss, saying: “Kashmiri as a nation mourns his death.”

Dr. Qasba Nabi, former commissioner Srinagar Municipal Corporation expressed deep shock, praying for Allah’s mercy and forgiveness.

Former civil servant and historian Dr. Abdul Wahid, recalling childhood memories from Khwaja Bazar, said Dr. Naqshbandi was “probably the first CVTS surgeon of Kashmir… an efficient general surgeon, disciplined and honest, a man of few words but with deep self-respect.”

Historian Abdul Ahad called him “a dear friend and well-wisher whose kindness and support meant a great deal,” while cartoonist colleagues and GMC alumni expressed their grief at the loss of what they called a pillar of medical education in the Valley.

Former administrative officer Farooq Peer, who worked with him during challenging times at Associated Hospitals, remembered him as a source of constant support: “He was always available for help and made my stay easier by using his good offices whenever required.”

Suhail Naqshbandi, a prominent Kashmiri cartoonist and close relative, described him as a brother and recalled his lifelong connection to Khwaja Bazar and the Naqshbandi lineage.

Mubashir Rufai, another relative, announced the passing and remembered him as a surgeon who left “indelible marks in the field of medicine” and as the founder of the Cancer Society of Kashmir.

GMC Srinagar, in a condolence message, said the institution deeply mourns the passing of its former principal and acknowledged his contributions to medicine and medical education in the region.
