Srinagar: In a bid to tackle a growing public health threat, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah will chair an emergency meeting on Monday morning at the Civil Secretariat here to address the alarming cases of unlabelled and unknown meat distribution across Jammu & Kashmir.
The move comes in the wake of recent large-scale seizures of unspecified and unsafe meat in Srinagar and several districts. Officials say the Chief Minister will review how contaminated consignments are entering the Valley without adequate checks and will push for a swift tightening of inspection protocols.
“A zero-tolerance policy towards food safety violations is on the cards,” a senior official told reporters, hinting at stronger accountability measures for regulatory departments.
According to sources, Abdullah will seek detailed reports on the current monitoring of the meat supply chain, gaps in border inspections, and coordination between food safety and enforcement agencies. The meeting will also examine market inspection practices and explore mechanisms to detect and destroy unsafe products before they reach consumers.
The Chief Minister is expected to finalise a multi-pronged strategy, including stricter cold chain checks, closing supply loopholes at entry points, scheduling surprise inspections, and fast-tracking prosecution of offenders.
Sources added that a real-time reporting system may also be introduced to prevent adulterated consignments from slipping through regulatory cracks.
