The retirement day: A tribute to  Romesh Chander ji

By: Mool Raj

On May 31, 2025, an era came to a graceful close at PM Shri Government Higher Secondary School, Khellani, Doda, as Romesh Chander ji, a beloved Science and Mathematics teacher, retired from his duties after more than 28 years of distinguished service in the Education Department of Jammu & Kashmir.

Retirement is often seen not as an end but as a new beginning. It is a phase of life marked by reflection, fulfillment, and, for many, a sense of purposeful transition. For Mr. Romesh, this moment is not just a personal milestone but a collective memory for his colleagues, students, and the larger community.

Born and raised in the scenic village of Khellani, some 12 kilometers from Doda town, Mr. Chander’s educational journey began in the local government schools. He completed his 12th from Government Higher Secondary School, Doda, earned a B.Sc from Government Degree College, Bhaderwah, and later pursued M.A degrees in Education and Political Science from the University of Jammu. His academic foundation was further strengthened with a B.Ed from the same university.

In 1997, Mr. Chander began his career as a government school teacher, starting his service in erstwhile Doda district. Over nearly three decades, he served in various schools including Government Middle School Hud, Government Lower High School Kalhota, Government HSS Hambal, and Government High School Malhori. His final posting at Government PM Shri Higher Secondary School, Khellani, marked the culmination of a journey rooted in commitment, discipline, and a profound sense of duty.

To honour his remarkable service, a grand farewell ceremony was held in the school premises. The event was attended by teaching staff, civil society members, and local residents, all united in their appreciation and affection for Mr. Chander. The emotional farewell, marked by tearful goodbyes, was a testament to the deep respect he earned during his years of service.

Speakers at the event highlighted Mr. Chander’s dedication, punctuality, and sincerity. In an age when education is often overshadowed by commercial motives, Mr. Chander stood as a beacon of integrity and selflessness. His noble intentions, tireless efforts, and student-friendly approach made him not only a great teacher but a mentor and role model for many.

In parting, one of the attendees emotionally summed up the sentiment of the day:
“It hurts so much to say goodbye. But this is the perfect occasion to let you know that you were the best teacher in our district. Your honesty, integrity, and commitment have left an indelible mark on all of us. Teachers like you are rare to find in these times.”

As Romesh Chander enters this new chapter, we wish him comfort, happiness, and continued purpose in his post-retirement life. Retirement, after all, is not a full stop—but a semicolon, signifying a continuation of service in new, meaningful ways.

May the Almighty bless him with good health, peace, and the choicest of His blessings in the years to come.
