SRINAGAR: In a heartfelt appeal issued today, the Shahre Khass Traders and Chambers has urged the people of Jammu & Kashmir to observe simplicity in marriage functions and avoid lavish expenditures that often place undue financial stress on economically weaker families in these difficult times.
The organisation expressed deep concern over the growing trend of extravagant weddings in the region, describing them as “socially irresponsible” and contrary to the values of simplicity and community support.
“People are increasingly indulging in opulent marriage practices, creating an unrealistic benchmark that others feel pressured to follow. This leads to unnecessary financial distress, especially for low-income households,” the statement issued to Ziraat Times read.
The Chambers highlighted that such excessive spending not only deepens social inequality but also fosters unhealthy competition within society. It stressed the importance of promoting cultural values that are more inclusive, modest, and considerate of all socio-economic groups.
Calling for concrete policy measures, the organisation appealed to the Department of Hospitality and Protocol of the Jammu & Kashmir Government to take serious cognizance of the matter.
“We urge the department to look into this reality and consider implementing practical measures to regulate and curb these unsustainable practices,” the statement added.
