Dispense ₹100, ₹200 notes through ATMs: RBI instructs banks

New Delhi: The Reserve Bank of India has directed all banks and white level ATM operators to dispense ₹100 or ₹200 denomination from at least one cassette.

Normally, an ATM has four cassettes. According to RBI monthly bulletin, as on March 31, Bank owned 2.20 lakh ATMs, while number of white level ATMs is 36 thousand. There are 14.82 micro-ATMs.

According to a notification dated April 28, as part of an endeavour towards enhancing public access to frequently used denominations of banknotes, “it has been decided that all banks and White Label ATM Operators (WLAOs) shall ensure that their ATMs dispense ₹100 and ₹200 denomination banknotes on a regular basis.”

Deadline of September 30 has been fixed for 75 per cent of all ATMs to dispense either ₹100 or ₹200 denomination banknotes from at least one cassette.

“By March 31, 2026, 90 per cent of all ATMs shall dispense either ₹100 or ₹200 denomination banknotes from at least one cassette,” the notification said. There is no indication that currency note in the denomination of ₹500 will not be available.
