Windstorm damages property, apple orchards across Kashmir

Srinagar: A powerful windstorm that swept through the Kashmir Valley on Sunday night has caused extensive damage to property and apple orchards, particularly in the southern and northern districts. The storm, accompanied by heavy rainfall and hail in sonme areas, has left a trail of destruction, with apple growers reporting significant losses, including in high-density (HD) apple orchards.

In Srinagar and other parts of North and South Kashmir, rooftops of many houses and buildings have been blown away, causing extensive economic damage.

The windstorm comes after a day of high temperature, touching 31 C in Srinagar.

South Kashmir: Shopian and Kulgam bear the brunt

In South Kashmir, the districts of Shopian and Kulgam have been the worst affected. Villages such as Ghulab Taing, Keller Mastpora, Shadab Karewa, Kanipora, Zawoora, Manloo, Narapora, and Pargochu in Shopian district have reported severe damage to apple orchards. The storm uprooted trees, stripped branches, and destroyed blossoms, leaving farmers devastated.

In South Kashmir, areas like Kulgam, Kapran and Rawalpora have also suffered significant losses. The hailstorm damaged blooming flowers in orchards, which are crucial for the upcoming harvest.

Baramulla and Budgam hit hard

In North Kashmir, districts such as Baramulla and Ganderbal have experienced similar devastation. The storm has flattened entire orchards, stripping trees of fruit, leaves, and branches just months ahead of harvest. Farmers report total crop loss in many areas, with unripe apples destroyed before reaching maturity.

Kashmir contributes nearly 75% of India’s total apple output, making horticulture a cornerstone of the region’s economy.
