Income tax returns filing date extended

New Delhi: The Income Tax Department has officially extended the deadline for filing ITRs that were originally due on or before July 31, 2025. The new due date is now September 15, 2025.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) made this decision after delays in issuing the new ITR forms and the necessary tools (utilities) required for filing. These forms have gone through several changes this year, and the tax department needed more time to prepare the systems and make them ready for public use.

The IT Department wrote on X, “This extension will provide more time due to significant revisions in ITR forms, system development needs, and TDS credit reflections. This ensures a smoother and more accurate filing experience for everyone. Formal notification will follow.”

This extension mostly helps salaried employees and other individuals whose accounts don’t need to be audited. These taxpayers generally have a July 31 deadline each year. With the new date, they now have 46 extra days to file their returns.

It’s a welcome relief for many, especially those waiting for updated TDS details or still figuring out how to handle the new ITR format.
