Ziraat Times Team Report

Srinagar; In a significant boost to Kashmir’s rich artistic heritage, eight traditional crafts have been successfully registered under the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. This milestone is expected to provide global recognition and economic benefits to artisans involved in these crafts.

The crafts that have received the GI tag include:

  1. Kashmir Namda – Traditional felted wool rugs known for their intricate embroidery.

  2. Kashmir Gabba – Handcrafted rugs made from recycled wool with vibrant patterns.

  3. Kashmir Willow Bat – Internationally renowned cricket bats crafted from Kashmir willow wood.

  4. Kashmir Tweed – A fine woolen fabric used for high-quality winter wear.

  5. Crewel – A specialized embroidery technique with unique floral motifs.

  6. Kashmir Chain Stitch – Handcrafted needlework known for its elaborate designs.

  7. Shikara – The iconic wooden boats of Dal Lake, recognized for their artistic craftsmanship.

  8. Wagguv – A traditional handwoven grass mat used in Kashmiri homes.

Officials from the Department of Handicrafts and Handloom (DOH&H) Kashmir confirmed this achievement to Ziraat Times, stating that the GI registration would protect these crafts from imitation, ensure authenticity, and boost market demand. The GI tag also strengthens the region’s artisan economy by providing exclusive rights to local craftsmen and ensuring fair pricing.

The move has been widely welcomed by artisans and industry stakeholders, who believe that GI recognition will help preserve these traditional crafts and expand their reach to global markets.

“This recognition is a game-changer for Kashmiri artisans. It will not only safeguard the authenticity of our craft but also open new avenues for economic growth,” said an official from DOH&H Kashmir.

With this latest development, the government aims to promote Kashmiri handicrafts through branding, better market access, and increased export potential. Efforts are also being made to raise awareness about GI-certified products among consumers to support the region’s rich cultural legacy.
