Srinagar city hospital backs Dr. Tahir Malik amid surgical controversy

Srinagar: New City Hospital, Srinagar, has issued an official statement addressing the recent controversy surrounding a surgical procedure conducted by Dr. Tahir Malik, a renowned gynecologist. The statement defends Dr. Malik’s decision to halt a surgery midway due to unforeseen complications, emphasizing that the move was made in the patient’s best interest to prevent potential life-threatening consequences.

Dr. Malik reportedly encountered severe adhesions—an abnormal condition where the intestines stick to pelvic organs—during the procedure. These adhesions significantly increased the risks of proceeding with the surgery. The hospital clarified that such conditions cannot be diagnosed through advanced imaging techniques like MRI or CT scans and can only be detected during exploratory laparotomy, a globally accepted diagnostic and surgical practice.

“The decision to stop the surgery was not taken lightly. Continuing the procedure could have resulted in catastrophic consequences, including severe complications or even fatal outcomes. Dr. Malik exercised his professional discretion to prioritize the patient’s safety,” said the hospital’s chairman, Mr. Altaf Beigh, in the official statement.

Call for Public Understanding

The statement urged the public to avoid spreading misinformation or speculating on the matter. It highlighted that questioning the credibility of an experienced medical professional without understanding the complexities of the situation is both disrespectful and defamatory.

“It is highly disrespectful to Dr. Malik and defaming to the hospital when individuals with no medical knowledge or context point fingers at those who are solely focused on the patient’s safety and well-being,” the hospital added.

New City Hospital also announced its intention to serve defamation notices to “self-proclaimed media houses” for allegedly spreading false information about the incident.
