J&K to get its maiden Govt Homeopathy Medical College in Kathua, Jammu

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir is set to achieve a significant milestone in health and medical education with the establishment of its first government homeopathy medical college.

The Ayush Ministry has approved the project, which will be built in Kathua district at an estimated cost of Rs 80 crore.

Classes are scheduled to begin from the current academic session, 2024-25. This new institution is expected to mark a turning point for students in the region, as they will no longer need to travel to other states for homeopathy education.

The process to establish the homeopathy college began five years ago. A site spanning 57 kanal and one marla (approximately seven acres) was identified in the Rakhshari area of Kathua district.

The proposed college will be constructed on this land, with interim arrangements for classes to be held at Kathua Medical College until the new building is completed.

Details reveal that the college has been approved for 63 seats in its first year, which includes reservations for economically weaker sections. Fifteen percent of the seats will be filled through the central pool, while the Jammu and Kashmir Board of Professional Entrance Examination (JKBOPEE) will handle the selection for the remaining seats.

The National Homeopathy Commission has directed authorities to appoint teaching staff within two months to ensure the timely start of the first batch. The commission has also emphasized the need for a dedicated homeopathy hospital to support the college. Regular updates on the construction progress will be monitored.

The establishment of this college is expected to benefit students from Jammu and Kashmir, offering them opportunities to study homeopathy within the union territory. —(KNO)
