ICC Jammu Chapter submits development proposals to CM Omar Abdullah

Srinagar: The Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC), Jammu Chapter, under the leadership of its Chairman, Rahul Sahai, accompanied by Samar Dev Charak, Anil Sharma, Ashish Jain, and Raj Dua, has submitted a detailed memorandum to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The proposals, presented during an interaction with civil society in Jammu, focus on key measures for the holistic development of Jammu & Kashmir.

According to a statement issued to Ziraat Times, Sahai extended warm congratulations to the Chief Minister and Dr. Farooq Abdullah, on the successful completion of their Holy Umrah, expressing confidence that their prayers will bring peace and prosperity to the region and the nation.

Key Proposals for Industrial Growth

The memorandum emphasized the urgent need to support local industries by:

  • Ensuring a level playing field through special industrial packages.
  • Facilitating the timely disbursement of ₹350 crores under the IDS 2017 scheme.
  • Expediting clearance of 1,450 pending cases under the NCSS 2021 incentives.
  • Extending the NCSS 2021 package with an increased budget and reserving at least 40% of benefits for local entrepreneurs, thereby fostering inclusive growth.

Sports Infrastructure and Economic Boost

Recognizing the transformative potential of sports for economic growth, Mr. Sahai proposed:

  1. Infrastructure Development:
    • Construction of two new stadiums in Jammu and a state-of-the-art indoor sports facility.
    • Benchmarking Jammu & Kashmir’s sports infrastructure against Himachal Pradesh’s 43 stadiums.
  2. Strategic Initiatives:
    • Establishing an advisory committee comprising experts from sports, tourism, industry, and civil society.
    • Creating an annual sports calendar to host major events across J&K.
    • Promoting golf tourism and expediting the completion of the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Kathua.

Promoting Exhibitions and Tourism

To capitalize on Jammu & Kashmir’s cultural and economic potential, the ICC proposed:

  • Organizing large-scale events akin to the Surajkund Mela to attract visitors and boost local economies.
  • Expanding district-level events such as the Baba Jito Mela.
  • Establishing a modern exhibition ground in Jammu.

Citing the success of the Legends League Cricket matches in Jammu and Srinagar, Mr. Sahai emphasized how such events invigorate the local economy and elevate Jammu as a global destination.

Commitment to Collaboration

Concluding the proposals, Mr. Sahai affirmed the ICC’s readiness to work alongside the government, stating:

“Our organization stands prepared to shoulder any responsibility deemed fit by the government to ensure the holistic development of Jammu & Kashmir.”

The ICC Jammu Chapter remains optimistic that these recommendations will receive positive consideration, benefitting the region’s citizens and driving sustainable growth, he said.
