CAIT Kashmir calls for ‘regulatory oversight’ for social media business pages

Srinagar: The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) Kashmir Chapter has urged authorities to monitor business pages operating on social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp to ensure they comply with existing rules and regulations.

Farhan Kitab, President of CAIT Kashmir Chapter, in a statement to Ziraat Times, expressed concern over the sale of high-value consumer products at prices significantly lower than those available through traditional brick-and-mortar retailers. He stated, “Social media platforms are undermining the retail sector’s viability by offering products at unfair prices. Authorities must intervene to check the quality and authenticity of these products to protect buyers from being cheated.”

Peer Imtiyaz, General Secretary of CAIT Kashmir Chapter, emphasized the impact on wholesale businesses, stating, “Unregulated imports and unchecked sales on social media platforms have severely affected the wholesale trade. Authorities need to step forward and enforce the necessary regulations.”

CAIT Kashmir has further recommended the implementation of a robust policy framework to ensure fair competition while safeguarding consumer interests. Additionally, the organization has proposed the imposition of an e-commerce luxury tax on high-end products sold through online platforms. Such a tax, they argue, would create a level playing field between e-commerce businesses and traditional retailers.
