Srinagar: Several car owners in Kashmir have reported receiving fraudulent emails claiming from Regional Transport Office (RTO), misleadingly sharing information about fake e-challan.
Officials told Ziraat Times that fraudsters are sending highly deceptive emails that appear to be from legitimate sources, such as the Regional Transport Office (RTO) or insurance providers, tricking recipients into clicking on malicious links.
The emails actually aim to defraud individuals of their sensitive credit card and debit card information.
How the email looks like:
The fraudulent email comes with a subject line designed to grab attention:
Subject: RTO e-challan Notification Ref: VHCL07445956
The email text misleads recipients with statements like: “e-Policy renewal for policy Number LMV885CV6544. Act now to check renewal status. Our records show it is pending for urgent renewal. See details.”
It urges recipients to:
- Enter their vehicle number along with a district pincode to “check policy status.”
- Click on links to check insurance expiry dates, buy new vehicle insurance, or renew policies.
The email finally shares another link claiming to offer “best offers” for renewal.
Officials said these emails seem to be carefully crafted to appear legitimate, but clicking on the embedded links redirects users to malicious websites. Once there, scammers attempt to steal sensitive financial details such as credit card or debit card numbers, PINs, and CVV codes. Victims may also unknowingly download malware onto their devices.
How to Protect Yourself
Authorities and cybersecurity experts urge people to remain vigilant and follow these safety measures:
- Do not click on unknown links in emails, especially those that seem urgent or too good to be true.
- Verify the sender’s email address carefully. Fraudsters often use addresses that appear similar to legitimate ones but contain subtle errors.
- Do not provide personal or financial details online unless you are certain of the website’s authenticity.
- Contact your service provider directly if you receive emails about policy renewals or payments. Use official contact information from trusted sources.
- Install antivirus software and keep it updated to detect and block malicious activities.
