Srinagar, Aug 17: The announcement made by the Department of Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs (FCS&CA) in Jammu & Kashmir this week to expand the coverage of free and subsidised foodgrains has received little attention. So what would the announcement mean for households? Ziraat Times explains:
Enhanced Food Security:
The provision of additional foodgrains for Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) and Priority Households (PHH) targets that these vulnerable sections have an assured access to essential food supplies, particularly in times of increased need.
Extended Coverage:
The decision impacts a large portion of the population, with 25.11 lakh households and 98.64 lakh beneficiaries currently covered under the Public Distribution System (PDS) in Jammu & Kashmir.
Free Foodgrains:
Under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), 16.64 lakh households, comprising 66.18 lakh beneficiaries, are eligible to receive free foodgrains each month in J&K.
Subsidized Foodgrains for Non-Priority Households:
Nearly 8.47 lakh Non-Priority Households, with 32.46 lakh beneficiaries, will continue to benefit from subsidized foodgrains, making essential staples like rice, wheat, and wheat flour affordable.
Additional Foodgrains for PHH: The implementation of the Prime Minister’s Food Supplementation for Priority Households Scheme provides additional rice at a subsidized rate (Rs. 25/kg) to PHH households, aims that their total food entitlement can reach up to 35 kgs under all schemes.
Option to Purchase Extra Foodgrains:
The scheme includes a provision for AAY and PHH families to purchase additional foodgrains at market rates, including the actual procurement cost from the Food Corporation of India (FCI) plus handling charges.
