Jammu’s Basmati farmers meet Agriculture Minister; seek price support for strugging commodity

New Delhi, 15 July: A delegation from the Nations Development Association (NDA) and the Marshal Society Welfare Society, representing farmers from RS Pura and Bishnah in Jammu, met with the Minister of Agriculture of the Government of India. The purpose of the meeting was to advocate for a fair price for the premium quality Basmati rice cultivated by these farmers.

Despite their efforts in producing high-quality Basmati rice, these farmers face challenges in securing fair prices, which leads to minimal profit margins. The delegation urged the Minister to address this long-standing issue by taking several measures:

1. Setting a Remunerative Minimum Support Price (MSP):

Fixing a fair MSP for Basmati rice to ensure farmers receive a profitable return.

2. Timely Procurement: Ensuring that government agencies procure the rice promptly.

3. Incentives for Productivity and Quality Enhancement:

Providing incentives to boost productivity and maintain high quality.
4. Promoting International Trade: Encouraging the export of Basmati rice from RS Pura and Bishnah under government export promotion schemes.

The delegation included Swarn Singh Charak, Chairman of the Nations Development Association (NDA); Sushil Singh Charak, Founder and General Secretary of NDA; Deepak Singh, Secretary of NDA; Mohan Barraik, Chairman of the Marshal Society Welfare Society; and Rojina Backer, General Secretary of the Marshal Society Welfare Society. They expressed their gratitude to the Minister for their time and consideration and are hopeful for a positive outcome.
