Pooran Krishan Bhat tragedy: Kashmir’s clergy condemns incident, terms it against humanity

Srinagar, Oct 16: The killing of Pooran Krishan Bhat belonging to Kashmiri Pandit community at Chandergund, Shopian, by suspected militants on Sunday has evoked widespread condemnation from religious scholars across Kashmir, who termed the incident as barbaric and against basic tenets of Islam. The religious scholars, including Imams and Khateebs while quoting Qur’anic verses said, “killing any innocent amounts to killing of entire humanity and that the killing of KP at Shopian should be thoroughly investigated.”

On Saturday, suspected militants shot dead Pooran Krishan Bhat in Shopian outside his home. His body was taken to Jammu for last rites. Soon after the incident, local Muslim neighbours flooded Bhat’s house to offer condolences and to express solidarity with the bereaved family.

A number of Kashmir’s leading UIema, Imams and Khateebs, commenting on the incident while speaking to news agency Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said that Islam doesn’t allow killing of any innocent human being. “The incident should be thoroughly investigated and those guilty should be punished,” said Kashmir’s Grand Mufti, Nasir ul Islam.

He said that killing of any innocent human being tantamount to killing of entire humanity.

Speaking to KNO, Karwan-e-Islami Patron Alama Sheikh Ghulam Rasool Hami said that killing of Mr Bhat in Shopian deserves full condemnation.

“Maximum condemnation should pour in against this inhuman act. Islam doesn’t support any such act. Kashmir is a land of sufis, reshis and munis, which has never supported or justified killings of innocent human beings. We as a collective and responsible society strongly condemn the incident,” Mr Hami said.

Several Ulema, Khateebs, and Imams from other districts of Kashmir have condemned the killing of Pooran Bhat of Shopian. They maintain that Kashmiri society, as a whole, strongly condemns killings of innocent civilians, as such killings are totally unislamic in nature.
