Moscow: Russia has banned Twitter and Youtube throughout the country in response to its news media being blocked across the western world, according to Interfax news agency.
Earlier today, Russia also blocked Facebook across the country, another example of online censorship that was met with stark criticism from Western countries.
Russia’s media watchdog said Friday it had restricted access to the BBC and other independent media websites as well.
“We are deeply concerned about this and concerned about the threat on freedom of speech in the country,” said White House press secretary Jen Psaki.
President Putin also signed a bill into law today that introduces jail terms of up to 15 years for people publishing “fake news” about the Russian army as Russia moves forward with its invasion of Ukraine, reports Agence France-Presse.
