NIT Srinagar organises awareness workshop on patent filing, start-up

Srinagar, Mar 28: The Institutions Innovation Council (IIC) in collaboration with the Torus-Design Thinking Club of National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar on Monday organized an awareness workshop on patent filing and start-up’.

Dean Research & Consultancy, NIT Trichy Prof. S. Muthukumaran was the chief guest and main speaker for the event.

The session began with the inaugural address of Dr. Dinesh Kumar R, Convenor IIC and faculty advisor of Torus Club. He welcomed dignitaries, guests, and participants to the workshop.

In his expert talk, Prof. S. Muthukumaran explained a thorough idea and steps involved in filing a patent and hence the significance of claiming an invention to your name.

He gave many life examples as well as that of many industries and brands ranging from Coca-Cola to Tesla as to how their innovations have changed the world and are shaping the future.

Prof. Muthukumaran also answered many of the questions that were raised by the attendees and cleared their doubts regarding patents and how the process takes place.

On the occasion, Director NIT Srinagar, Prof. (Dr.) Rakesh Sehgal said the patent filing is important and provides its owner with the right to exclude others from exploiting the patented technology, including, for example, making, using, or selling the patented invention.

“The “exclusive right” enables the patent owner to recoup development costs and obtain a return of investment in the development of the patented technology, he said.

Prof. Sehgal also briefed students about ‘why start-ups and innovations are important and urged students to “bring their ideas to reality through the use of technology and knowledge”.

Dean Research & Consultancy, NIT Srinagar, Prof. M. F Wani explained that the entrepreneurial society in India is growing and that it is a golden time to get forward in the race of start-ups and enterprises.

“No country can survive without development and for development innovations are a necessity,” he said.

Institute’s Registrar, Prof. Syed Kaiser Bukhari said patents provide incentives to individuals; in particular, the inventors deserve recognition for their creativity and material reward for their marketable inventions.

“The incentives encourage innovation, which ensures that the quality of human life is enhanced,” he said.

Dr. Dinesh briefed about the IIC and Torus calendar activity throughout the year 2022.

The session was attended by faculty members of various departments. B.Tech, M.tech, and Ph.D. students later complimented IIC and Torus for their efforts in organizing informative sessions regarding the interesting topic.

A formal vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Dinesh Kumar. He expressed his gratitude to Prof. S. Muthukumaran, Director NIT Srinagar Prof. Sehgal, and all participants, for making the event a grand success.
