NC, Congress, CPI (M) concerned over loss to fruit growers

Srinagar, Oct 23: National Conference (NC) on Saturday impressed upon the incumbent J&K administration to rise up to the post snowfall exigencies.

Party’s Members of Parliament Muhammad Akbar Lone and Hasnain Masoodi have asked the divisional administration of Kashmir to come to the rescue of people in the upper regions of north, south and central Kashmir, where inclement weather and heavy downpour have taken a heavy toll on the lives of people.

They said the heavy snowfall in the upper reaches has severely damaged the vegetative and fruit bearing parts of the orchards.

The impact of the heavy downpour, the MPs noted, will impact the yield in the coming years; therefore making it imperative for the administration to step in to provide succor to the affected.

“No sooner the weather condition improves, the divisional administration should constitute revenue teams and depute them to access the losses incurred by orchardists so that the quantum of the compensation is worked out and distributed among the affected immediately,” they said.

Congress expresses concern over damages caused to fruit Growers

Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) Saturday expressed serious concern over the damages caused to fruit growers in Shopian and elsewhere in Kashmir due to the fresh snowfall.

JKPCC urged the government to assess the losses caused to orchards in Shopian district and elsewhere in Kashmir due to the fresh snowfall, which has been catastrophic to the Fruit Industry, leaving the growers in a great difficulty.

It was very sad to learn about the damages caused to Fruit, the growers need to be compensated for the damages they have suffered due to the snowfall, JKPCC added and emphasized that the losses must be assessed in order to ensure timely compensation to them (growers).

Provide immediate compensation to orchardists: CPI (M)

Expressing serious concern over the losses caused to orchardists by untimely snowfall in the Kashmir valley, CPI (M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami Saturday demanded immediate compensation to the affected growers.

Tarigami said that a large number of fruit bearing trees are reported to have suffered damages due to unseasonal snowfall, witnessed in several parts of Kashmir valley.

Reportedly, 50 per cent fruit crop was yet to be harvested in twin districts of Shopian and Kulgam. There should be immediate assessment of losses suffered by the orchardists, he said.

“The government must depute expert teams to assess the losses especially in South Kashmir which has been the worst hit,” the CPI (M) leader demanded.

He said the CPI (M) has since long been demanding for implementation of crop insurance scheme in the region to benefit the orchardists and peasants’ in the event of natural calamities.
