Declare whole Kashmir as SEZ: PHDCCI Kashmir to PSC Commerce

Srinagar, Aug 24: The delegation of PHDCCI -J&K, headed by its Kashmir Region Chair, Baldev Singh Raina today, in the meeting with with the Department Related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce, chaired by V. Vijayasai Reddy, Member of Parliment, demanded declaring Kashmir valley as a ‘Special Economic Zone’.

The PHDCCI urged the parliamentary delegation to recommend in the report for declaration of whole Kashmir Valley as Special Economic Zone (SEZ), keeping in view the export potential of Handicraft, Handloom, Carpets, Horticulture produce, Trout Fish, Saffron, Honey and other indigenous products, a PHDCCI spokesperson said.

“The PHDCCI chairman informed the parliamentarians that the J&K Bank is the only Bank in J&K providing lending to entrepreneurs. It was also mentioned that UT administration lead by LG Sinha are working in a tremendous pace to develop infrastructure for export as well as industrial development of J&K”, the spokesperson said.

“The chairman also stated that Inland Container Dept. ICD at Rangreth Srinagar should be made operational and functional and development of complementary infrastructure such as roads connecting the production centers with the railways, setting up of Inland Container Depots and Container Freight Stations Creating good infrastructural facilities in potential export centers especially in Srinagar and Jammu should be on utmost priority”, the statement added.

“It was also apprised that the committee should recommend the Development Commissioner Handicrafts Ministry of Textiles GOI the IICT Srinagar should be made at par with IICT Badowi UP in excellence so that the carpet industry of J&K will be benefitted to boost exports of carpets, making CFC Nowshehra and Zakura functional and it was also mentioned that for the benefit of unit holders in Silk and Handicraft park Zakura the power loom service center through development commissioner power loom ministry of textiles Government of India be established, support for market Development Assistance, Brand Equity, Market research, and technology upgradation. The PHDCCI also presented the suggestions for Silk / Handicraft Park Zakura as the delegation is supposed to visit the park and it was stated to establish raw material bank, design bank and Marketing assistance under the scheme of MSME and power loom services centre by power loom commissioner ministry of textiles government of India and upgradation of basic infrastructure like roads, drainage, illumination and STP/ ETP and opening of SME Branch”, the statement further added.

The meeting was attended by Principal Secretary Industries and Commerce and Chairman J&K Bank and senior officials of Ministry of Commerce and MS JKTPO and Director Handicrafts and Handloom, Punjab National Bank and Indian Exim Bank.
