3-day rain spell: Is Kashmir bracing for more floods?

Srinagar: An uncertain and critical 3-day wet spell has begun across Jammu & Kashmir Sunday night, with heavy rains and thunder storms beginning from Jammu region and eventually resulting into heavy rainfall in Kashmir valley, mainly in parts of South Kashmir.

As these lines were being written on early Monday morning, South Kashmir’s higher reaches were witnessing heavy to very heavy rainfall.

Analysis of multiple weather data by Ziraat Times indicates that heavy to very heavy rains are likely across J&K, mainly southern parts of Kashmir during this 3-day period, reminiscent of the 2016 August rainfall.

Even as the exact amount of rainfall is uncertain, localised and heavy rainfall, coupled with some snowfall in the Himalayas on Wednesday, are cumulatively expected to result in flash floods im several areas of J&K during these days.

In the last few days, unprecedented rainfall in J&K’s neighbourhood, mainly in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, have resulted in dramatic flash flood situations.

Globally, climate change is lately manifesting in unanticipated precipitation patterns, mainly high amounts of rainfall in limited time and space. This precipitation spell in Kashmir valley may also throw up a surprising situation, Ziraat Times weather analysis suggests.
