Srinagar: With the Trinamool Congress, the DMK and the leftist LDF all set to form governments in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala after their resounding Assembly victories; political parties across the board in J&K today see a glimmer of hope for democracy, secular ethos and constitutional supremacy in the country.
Bharatiaya Janata Party (BJP) has retained Assam and has also won the election in the union territory of Pudducherry.
Omar Abdullah’s dig at the Election Commission
National Conference (NC) vice president Omar Abdullah was among the first to congratulate Mamata Banerjee for the TMC’s ”remarkable victory” in the West Bengal assembly polls, saying the BJP and a thoroughly partisan Election Commission threw everything at her, but she prevailed.
“Heartiest congratulations to @MamataOfficial didi & everyone at @AITCofficial for the remarkable victory in West Bengal. The BJP & a thoroughly partisan Election Commission threw everything including the kitchen sink at you & you prevailed. All the best for the next 5 years”, Omar wrote on Twitter.
Mehbooba’s message
PDP president Mehbooba Mufti was also quick to congratulate the TMC on its performance in the assembly polls.
In her tweet Sunday, the former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister said, “Congratulations to @MamataOfficial @AITCofficial @derekobrienmp on their splendid victory today. Kudos to the people of West Bengal for rejecting disruptive & divisive forces”.
Congress reaction
Speaking to Ziraat Times, veteran Congress leader Taj Mohiuddin, Taj Moihuddin said that these results were “a lesson to the ruling party at the centre” and that the BJP should understand that everything cannot be won using aggressive and manipulative means and that they have to be inclusive in their political approach.
On the question whether these results would strengthen the clamour for the restoration of statehood to J&K, Mr Taj was of the view that ‘J&K was to get statehood in any case.’
Would these results strengthen the glamour for restoration of democracy and political rights in J&K?
Observing that the results of these Assembly Elections mark a win for democracy, National Conference Spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar told Ziraat Times that the people in these elections had given mandate to those parties who oppose communal politics of division and polarisation.
On the question whether these results would strengthen the voices for the restoration of J&K’s statehood, Mr Imran said that the party has already put its case in the Supreme Court and that we earnestly wish to get justice from the Supreme Court. However, Mr Imran was cautious that these elections could make a major change in the course of the politics at the centre.
“It is hard to say if these results would strengthen democracy and constitutional supremacy, since Modi ji is at the helm of everything,a dn all the vital constitutional institutions are under their influence”, he said.
Senior National Conference leader Tanvir Sadiq said that these election results are unlikely to alter the national narrative set by the ruling party at the centre.
“But when it comes to efforts that seek to strengthen constitutional supremacy in the country, yes, definitely, there will be an impetus”, he said.
While it is a fact that these state-level parties have been vocal for maintaining the sanctity of the country’s constitutional democracy and also the democratic rights of people of J&K, it would be too premature to speculate if this will translate into greater clamour for the restoration of rights of Kashmiri people.
Asked if Dr Farooq Abdullah would be attending the swearing in ceremony of the newly-elected chief ministers, Mr Saidq said that in view of the Covid situation and the fact that doctor sahab had himself come out of his Covid situation, that is uncertain.
Maintaining that statehood was not much of an issue for the People’s Democractic Party (PDP), the party spokesperson Suhail Bukhari told Ziraat Times that these election results demonstrate that even as there was a high-decibel campaign by the BJP, with everything at their disposal, it is the character that has won.
“Mamata ji won against all the BJP muscle”, he said.
“We have always maintained that it is not about statehood, it is the illegal and unconstitutional way that our ways were taken that is the real issue, and we will
continue to fight till it is restored”, he said, adding, “it is hard to say that these results would help in restoring constitutional sanctity in the country. We saw the powers of Delhi CM curtailed recently in a similar fashion as that of J&K’s CM. We tried to warn everyone that the way J&K’s status was downgraded the same may be replicated elsewhere. Nevertheless, we will continue to strive for our constitutional rights”, he added.
Despite repeated calls no J&K-level spokesperson responded to requests for their reaction to these election results.
